My Story

My Photography Journey

Introduction

I’m Isaiah Henderson, a photographer, climber, and storyteller who’s been carrying a camera since I was a teenager. My love for photography started with my mom, who used to take me along on her photo shoots. At first, I was just curious about how the camera worked, but pretty soon it became more than that. I picked it up, practiced, and found out this was how I wanted to see and share the world.

But really, adventure has been in me from the start. Before I could even walk, I’d crawl to the big patio window in our house and sit there for hours, staring outside. Sometimes I’d fall asleep in that spot, just dreaming about being out there. And once I could walk, that was it—I was gone. Running outside became my thing, and I never stopped.

The Next Chapter

That spirit carried me into middle school at Grizzlies Prep, where I joined the Grizzlies Scholars program. One of my first big adventures was an expedition to Deer Hill in Colorado. It was the first time I was away from home, without electronics, and it opened my eyes. I saw nature differently. The sky, the clouds, the air—it made me realize I wasn’t afraid to fly, to take risks, to see the world in ways most people don’t.

High school gave me my next big passion. Walking home one day, I noticed a new rock-climbing gym being built. The owner stepped outside, asked if I wanted to try it, and I said yes. That yes turned into something much bigger. Memphis Rox became my second home. It challenged me, cleared my head, and gave me community. I went from climber to volunteer, and eventually to coach and staff, sharing that same love with others.

Photography never left me. I kept building my craft while traveling and climbing, using my lens to tell stories the way I see them—bold, adventurous, and full of movement. In 2023, I traveled to Africa and climbed Mount Kenya, an experience that became part of Memphis to Mountain, a documentary series set to stream on Hulu.
